Living alongside our badgers

We share the site with urban badgers, and a few plots near their setts are out of action (you may spot gaps in the plot numbers). Although gardening alongside badgers can be frustrating at times, they're part of what makes Royate Hill special. For advice on gardening alongside them, the National Allotment Society has a helpful guide.

Bristol Seed Swap

A friendly local network for swapping seeds and growing know-how across the city. A great way to find unusual varieties and share your own.

The Haven

A grassroots, drug- and alcohol-free community nature project on the nearby Clay Bottom allotments, specifically for people who have become socially isolated through addiction, trauma or mental health difficulties. It offers peer support rooted in nature, creativity and community, and runs groups for people in recovery.

Open days are every Tuesday and Friday from midday. The roundhouse community space can also be hired — a sideline rather than the focus, but do get in touch if you'd like to use it.

Premier Seeds Direct

Affordable seeds without the foil packaging, frequently cheaper than garden centres and in larger quantities. Great for sowing a whole plot or splitting a packet with a neighbour.

Brilliant, practical advice on growing food on an allotment, with recipes and month-by-month tips. A friendly, well-stocked reference for whatever you're growing.
